Ms. Chesterman, I am one of those many U.S. citizens who are quietly protesting this sad state of affairs by spending USD in Canada. I just returned from the Montreal Jazz Festival--amazing as always--and spent more on a hotel, some of Montreal's exquisite restaurants, museums and Quebec-made crafts. We drank exclusively Canadian wines and I brought a CA gin home to share with friends. Your people opened their arms to us as they have in the past and my guest, a first-time visitor, was entranced. One of my personal high points of the trip was the two hours I spent at the McCord immersing myself in the exhibition on Montreal's culinary history. Brava to you for your role in it!
Brava! This brought me to tears. So sad and yet so proud of Canada for standing up to our tyrant when so few have. My people are from Canada; my paternal line from Normandy to Quebec in the 1600s, my maternal line Scots migrating to PEI. From our vacation home on Lake Champlain we have noted far fewer boats flying CA flags. We miss you but understand and support your resistance. Counting the days until trump is no more.
No trip to the USA and almost no grocery items… We are keeping our great Californian wines from Chapellet winery for the mid terms and the 2028 election… with all fingers crossed. As I said a few times when they express their excuses… stop saying your sorry and fix it. Stand up and vote so that we feel like neighbours again… and we will be back! Xx
Leslie, I am still furious and find I am not alone. People here really do watch what they buy. We stay away from the Mexican stuff that is supplied by the States. It has been extremely inconvenient but still one must do what one can, and we, as a nation, can. You wish for American ballet…. Go to Europe for a bit…favour them. Even some of our authors are boycotting the U.S. and I am impressed. I have bought books from them for myself and to give because they, too, are suffering. So, stay in Canada, or go anywhere but the States…..elbows up, please.
I too miss my frequent trips to the US, but absolutely cannot bring myself to go back anytime in the near future. There is still such a large proportion of people that support the horrendous things that are being done. Reading about ICE and what they are doing is just unbelievable to me ( in addition to so many other issues obviously). I am happy to spend my money within our own country or visit elsewhere while bypassing the US.
Living in Vancouver it has been a regular activity to visit the US for the day or for an extended stay. I have been going for 60+ years; no more.
For many like myself, it is NOT about the money, be it the exchange rate (not great much of my life) or the tariffs. It is completely about the disrespect towards our country and our PM. One cannot put a price tag on respect.
I didn't visit the US that often, so find no problem avoiding it completely. If this was the 1st time he'd been elected, bad luck for the country. However, it was the 2nd time, so no one can claim that they hadn't any idea what they were in for - electing a convicted sex offender with no understanding of economics or respect for anyone other than autocrats. While our geography shackles us, you can probably count the countries that haven't been adversely impacted on the fingers of one hand. So I continue to vote with my money: Canadian goods and services 1st; then the rest of the world. I hope more Canadians do too, though I recognise that could be a luxury families struggling with affordability aren't in a position to make, what with Canadian food inflation the highest in the G7.
I'm an American and I too feel terrible for the U.S. government's recent behavior vis-a-vis Canada (and pretty much in every other regard). My wife and I visited Montreal last month and everyone was impossibly friendly and gracious, as usual. More power to you who boycott — maybe someone will eventually get the hint that this is no way to treat our closest friends!
I’m with you 100%. I live in Sonoma, California and it breaks my heart to see old vines plowed up ready to burn. The wine industry is hurting.
The orange geek is in full dementia but keeps going. We hate him!
My husband and I have a fishing hut in Telkwa, Northern BC and spend the steelhead months enjoying just being in Canada with the best neighbors.
I know Palm Springs has lost alit of Canadians who came every winter in big rigs or second homes. Not so much now. Good! Protest! This regime sucks and is not representative of America nor Americans! Keep up the fight - we are!!!
I have for a long time been a reader of Cook Illustrated, I was a subscriber until Trump #2. I really enjoy the research that came with their recipes. I have cancelled my subscription and wrote to them about why I did it, sadly they never came back to me with some sort of feedback. I like our Apple phone and we are familiar with to the way it works, but when it came to renew our second phone we went with Samsung. I have lots of good memories of my trips to the USA, some are vivid has it was yesterday even if they were 50 years ago, but now I will not set foot in the USA until the big Orang-outan mind set has change. Most of the time we spend more on groceries in order to avoid USA products. I believe in elbows-up. USA is a nation build on immigration yet they treat immigrants like (can’t use the word I want here but it start with S). Some say they did not have a choice, I say yes you have a choice you could show up and select none of the above.
For a minute there I thought I was on the Paul Krugman Sub ^^ . Excellent perspective and post, though I have to admit I still fall into the 'never U.S.' camp. I just don't trust that one of those 'all-C's-in-high-school' border patrol types isn't going to confiscate my phone and detain my family one day because I happen to demonstrate thoughtfulness and empathy on social media once in awhile.
By the way our daughter is hoping to be accepted in the Pâtisserie professionnelle program at the ITHQ starting in January. If you have any tips for her application don't hesitate to reach out : )
Thanks for sharing your viewpoint. Finally bringing Canada together is not nothing. Im a Canadian expat, now American. I voted for Trump, and my single biggest regret is there wasn’t a real choice in that binary decision. Am I disappointed in him? Yes, sometimes. Do I agree with him on everything ? No, of course not. Do I think we needed a shock like him. Yes I do. I think it ultimately will be good for Canada too. I also think this rift will be repaired, and we will be both better off for it. I knew your Mom & Dad, he professionally and as a friend.I can easily devine what he would have thought and said on this topic.I can see the family resemblance, I wish we could meet someday. He spoke so often of you,

Thank you for your thought-provoking piece. I was particularly struck by the underlying sadness your commentary evoked,
